A mandarin

What happens to an ordinary thing when you look at it long enough.

Why a mandarin

Because it is boring. Only a boring thing can prove the point.

Choose something already beautiful and of course it rewards attention; that proves nothing. Choose the thing nobody gives a second glance — a mandarin left on a table — and keep looking until it turns into something else.

This is what I do for a brand. Most products do not speak for themselves, not because they are poor but because nobody has looked long enough. The images are AI-generated watercolour, made from my own storyboard and prompts — not photography, and not any real product.

One scroll, one passage of time.

Scrolling down here is not going down. It is going closer.

A mandarin

You have probably seen one today. You have probably not looked at one.

One ordinary mandarin on a bare pale surface, watercolour.

Skin

A little closer and it stops being skin. It becomes ground.

The oil glands of mandarin peel magnified into terrain, watercolour.

Membrane

With the light coming through it from behind, it looks like a cathedral.

Segment membrane lit from behind, its structure like a cathedral, watercolour.

Further in

By here it is unrecognisable. It has always looked like this.

Juice vesicles magnified to abstraction, cut in hard marks in three colours only: ink, ember and paper.

Looking

Someone has been looking this whole time. You.

Extreme close-up of a human iris, fibres radiating outward from a deep black pupil, cut in hard marks in three colours only.

Back out

The same picture. It has not changed.

The same picture as the first: that ordinary mandarin, watercolour.

Original concept · AI-generated illustration and footage, made from my own storyboard and prompts.

And then

If you make something you believe would repay that kind of attention, we should probably talk.
